The Outsiders

Unit Overview:

In this unit I read the novel, The Outsiders. I worked in groups as a Reading Circle to complete different tasks for each section of the book. My jobs included Summarizer, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard, Connection Maker, and Discussion Director. Each job focused on a different standard, or skill. At the end of the unit I took an exam, and completed two individual projects that I selected from four choices-- 1. a wanted poster for one of the characters, 2. a soundtrack of five song selections for the story, 3. a an interview with one of the characters, or 4. a book jacket with original chapter titles.

Areas of Strengths:

Vocabulary Acquisition:

Use various strategies to determine or clarify the meaning of vocabulary words in context. I think I am good at this because I was a word wizard once and I was trying to find the definition of different words and I did it very well.

Areas for Improvement:

Craft and Structure:

Identity and interpret figurative language and other literary devices used in the text. I think I'm not really good at this because I did once Literary Luminary and it was pretty hard for me.

Questions:

How does wealth (or poverty) affect a person’s social status?

It usually doesn't affect you but being wealthy means your friends can take advantage of you and still be friend.

Does family always have to be made up of relatives?

No, your friends can be considered family.
