American Born Chinese

Unit Overview:

In this unit I read the novel, American Born Chinese. Throughout this unit I explored the idea of Stereotypes and how they were represented in the story, and how they are displayed in everyday life. I completed vocabulary and comprehension exercises in my Reader’s Notebook for each chapter, and created my own graphic novel, or comic book, as a final project.

Strengths:

Vocabulary Acquisition:

Use various strategies to determine or clarify the meaning of vocabulary words in context. I think I'm good at this because I can find the definition oа the word very easily.

Areas for Improvement:

Key Ideas and Details:

Recall important information and make inferences about the text. I think I'm not really good at this because I can't make inferences abour the text.

Questions:

How can you stay true to yourself in the face of judgment from your peers?

Don't make up stereotypes that may lead to bullying because maybe one day they will do the same to you.

Why do stereotypes exist? Are they ever accurate? Can a stereotype ever be positive?

Stereotypes exist because there are different types of races, culture, and more. Some stereotypes may be accurate but most of them are not true. A stereotype can be positive but most of them are negative.

How do stereotypes affect all of us?

Stereotypes can affect us because it can lead to bullying, which means people won't have friends. Some examples of stereotypes that affect us a lot include: Being black - Which you are born in, but you can't choose what color you want to be. Being Asian - You are also born this way, but you can never change this. Just being born Asian doesn't mean you should be excluded from activities.
